The word "trinity" is a term used to denote the Christian doctrine that God exists as a unity of three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Each of the persons is distinct from the other, yet identical in essence. In other words, each is fully divine in nature, but each is not the totality of the other persons of the Trinity. Each has a will, loves, and says "I", and "You" when speaking. The Father is not the same person as the Son who is not the same person as the Holy Spirit who is not the same person as the Father. Each is divine, yet there are not three gods, but one God. There are three individual subsistences, or persons. The word "subsistence" means something that has a real existence. The word "person" denotes individuality and self awareness. The Trinity is three of these, though the latter term has become the dominant one used to describe the individual aspects of God known as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Included in the doctrine of the Trinity is a strict monotheism which is the teaching that there exists in all the universe a single being known to us as God who is self-existent and unchangeable (Isaiah 43:10; 44:6,8). Therefore, it is important to note that the doctrine of the trinity is not polytheistic as some of its critics proclaim. Trinitarianism is monotheistic by definition and those who claim it is polytheistic demonstrate a lack of understanding of what it really is.
Some Christians object to God being referred to as a Trinity because the word Trinity is not found it the Bible, but neither is the word Bible found in the Bible. And the New Testament does present God to be written about to refer to the concept of the Trinity.
Most Jews object to the word and concept of the Trinity because they say that it presents God in a polytheistic way. But in the Old Testament God refers to Himself in the plural, “Us”. In Genesis God is referring to His own acts of creation, and thus referring to Himself. Genesis 1:26, Genesis 11:3, Genesis 11:7.
There are some that object because of semantics, the use of the word trinity or calling God anything but God, Elohim or I AM Who I AM.
If the Trinity is to be recognized as how God Is, should there be some evidence of this conceptually and perceptually in our world today?? Should then creation somehow mimic it’s Creator in some way?? After all it is written in the Bible that man was made in His image, and the Christian belief is that Christians consist of body, soul and spirit. Would this also not be a trinity? Although many would not accept this because it can not be proven empirically that man exists as anything but physical (just a body).
It can be asserted that this concept can be conceptually and perceptually demonstrated to exist in the world today, and is also accepted to be a valid reasonable concept. This concept can be demonstrated in the form of an analogy.
The following is accepted without question in the realm of science:
- Space - which is made up of height, width and depth. height is Space but it is not width or depth. Width is Space but it is not height or depth. Depth is Space but it is not height or width. And all are Space.
- Time - which is made up of past, present and future. Past is Time but it is not present or future. Present is Time but it is not past or future. Future is Time but it is not past or present. And all are Time.
- Matter - which is made up of solid, liquid and gas. Solid is Matter but it is not liquid or gas. Liquid is Matter but it is not solid or gas. Gas is Matter but it is not solid or liquid. And all are Matter.
Space, time and matter is everything in it's entirety that is known to exist empirically. If the above is correct in regards to space, time and matter, then why is there so many objections to the conceptual and perceptual knowledge of what the Trinity is said to be??
Is it unreasonable then when in the Bible:
- The Bible describes the Christian God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Father is God but He is not Son or Holy Spirit. Son is God but He is not Father or Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit is God but He is not Son or the Father. And all are God.
Why is the logic of the Trinity rejected when the exact same logic is universally accepted by science when referencing space, time and matter??
Is it happenstance that time, space and matter are recognizable to us in this way? It would seem that it is reasonable to conclude that it is observable to us like this because He created it so we may have a Relational Verification.
Blesssings.
